Song Information:

In the 1940s, '50s and '60s, hobby magazines like Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, and Science and Mechanics regularly predicted "dream cars" of all kinds that would make their way into everyday use by the 1970s, '80s, or '90s. By far the most popular were flying cars. Through the decades, Ford Motor Company has exhibited scale models of futuristic flying cars at the annual Detroit auto expos. Some visionary Ford cars of the future were the Nucleon, Levacar Mach I, and Volante Tri-Athodyne. This tune launches a new album focused on retro futurism -- the way the world today was envisioned by writers, artists, moviemakers, and companies like Ford in decades past. Future tunes in the Yesterday's Tomorrows album will track cities of the future, moon colonies, dream houses, future warfare, and the like. In the meantime, if you, like me, are an amateur paleo-futurist, check out http://paleo-future.blogspot.com/, which provided inspiration for Yesterday's Tomorrows.

Give me a great arpeggiator, and I'll go crazy! Albino 3 provides an unlimited supply of them, and by the middle of this tune, there are 4 layered into the mix, including a drum arpeggiator. Except for the jet sound effect and wonderful Groove Monkee MIDI drum loops (applied to the Paris House Remix kit), this is an original MIDI piece keyed in with the M-Audio KeyStation and tweaked with the pencil tool in GB4. There are two layered string arrangements: the first using Lunar Strings and the second using Octave Strings. I chose the Dana Bass (I found it as a freebie online a couple of years ago, but, alas, it seems to have since disappeared) because it's thick, a little fuzzy, but quite "hearable"; it's double-tracked, the second track an octave above the first to pull it out in front to be as much a lead instrument in the tune as the principal arpeggiated track. I also used an Arp emulator, the Arpalog (part of Synth PatchBank that installs easily into GB, from http://www.macsongtools.com/), for comping and decoration. This tune is mixed specifically for earbuds and headphones, although it seems to sound reasonably balanced in my (flying) car and on the living room stereo. Mastered in Ozone 3.
