I am always surprised by Mystified. When I first listened to the piano line that she improvised, I thought, I wish I had written that. So I was glad to play along. My goal here was not to mess anything up.


Mystified:
Amidst all the ambient vocals and experimentation I've done thus far, I wanted to do a particular piece. Something that illustrated one of my favorite Saturday 'rituals'...my morning canyon walk.

I envisioned music that illustrated the brightness of sunshine and brimming with the vibrancy of green, of swift-moving water and the sharp scent of pines and woodsy earth. Of birdsong in the trees overhead.
So, naturally, I approached Tom Atwood to help me bring this idea to fruition as a collaboration. I figured I would create a piano track and he could build upon it with guitar or instrumentals or such.

When I opened the track "Morning Walk" in GarageBand and started to improv a single piano line, I realized a few measures into it that it wasn't exactly going where I wanted it to go. But, as with all improvised tracks, I went ahead and finished it anyway and then set it aside.
Even though I didn't think the track I had recorded was right for the song "Morning Walk," I did think that it was the kind of music that Tom could fill and work with. Renaming the mp3 to "Improv 1," I sent it along for him to look at.

It was only after Tom had added his instrumental accompaniment that I could hear that this was indeed "Morning Walk"--complete with all the imagery I had imagined. And joy.


I'm so grateful to you, Tom. Far from 'messing it up,' you've taken this simple track and made it sparkle so beautifully! It's inspiring to work with such talent.
