Mortified, or triumphant?

Postby chrooke » Sun Jun 06, 2010 11:46 pm

Here's a tale from a couple of months ago that could have gone in the old "Live and Dangerous".

I attended a recital by the violinist who led the ensemble for my birthday concert. It was her last recital for her Doctorate. After the recital, I got to sit and chat for a while with her and her new husband. He was in from Miami for the weekend, where, I was told, he was also a violin student.

As we chatted about music and various other topics for a while, I got the perverse notion to play an excerpt from my Killing Time 2, in which I improvise on solo violin. Keep in mind I have no idea how to play a violin. Indeed, I have no idea how to even tune a violin. So this is several minutes of "jamming" from an untrained musician on an untuned instrument. Far from being appalled, they were actually amused, and mildly impressed that I had managed to generate any kind of tone at all with no training.

Later that evening, I look up the husband from Miami, and find he is the CONCERTMASTER of the Miami Symphony Orchestra!

Mortiphant?

Seriously, though, sounds like it ended well (unless you had been hoping to audition for the Miami Symphony Orchestra), which is all that matters.

It's a TRIUMPH!!! What's often unbelievable to real professional musicians is that everyone has his own music inside.
They should always remember that sometimes non professional musicians are able to compose wonderful things.

This is my DEEEEEEEEEEEP opinion! 8)

yeah, I agree with spiresvortex, I think that professional and trained musicians always learn something from listening to the untrained musician, something wonderful about the pure love of music that goes so far beyond technique.

I like it. I would have added some compression to it just to limit the dynamics of the violin but it probably would have made the ambient noises that much louder.

Whatevs. Grood Job. I'm going to re-string my cello that I only played five times before snapping the strings by trying to tune it up.

I am a big fan of Killing Time 2 and I actually think it's a triumph for the two very trained violinists to hear what I hear in that recording. It really is a fun performance. :D :D :D
