| CLARA'S CROSS Her name was Miss Clara Newell, and it was 1906, A Cross was given for her to wear, pearl and black onyx. a graduate of Mount Holyoke, Seminary She went to Puerto Rico instead of staying to marry. CHORUS: a 100 years since she's been gone. But Clara Newell's Cross lives on Then she was called/ across the ocean/ to teach in Istanbul. before the ship could even land, sick she was, Clara Newell. she died before her life began at the age of 23. For even a life good and kind has no guarantee. CHORUS: And though she died in vain, and her no-one to speak for. It Seems a life short lived, and learned deserves so much more. But the Cross was left for a memory a sign that she is well. Her sister passed the cross on, and now I show and tell.
