CLARA'S CROSS

Her name was Miss Clara Newell, and it was 1906,
A Cross was given for her to wear, pearl and black onyx.

a graduate of Mount Holyoke, Seminary
She went to Puerto Rico instead of staying to marry.

CHORUS:
a 100 years since she's been gone.
But Clara Newell's Cross lives on

Then she was called/ across the ocean/ to teach in Istanbul.
before the ship could even land, sick she was, Clara Newell.

she died before her life began at the age of 23.
For even a life good and kind has no guarantee.

CHORUS:

And though she died in vain, and her no-one to speak for.
It Seems a life short lived, and learned deserves so much more.

But the Cross was left for a memory a sign that she is well.
Her sister passed the cross on, and now I show and tell.

CHORUS:
