"No Sunshine"
:[ lyrics ]:
Ain’t no Sunshine

Ain’t no sunshine, anytime she’s not around,
And I’ve found It doesn’t quite feel like solid ground.
I feel the earth tremble when she disappears,
And I pray for the times when I can hold her near.
As I remember, one September, now lost in time’s blender,
First grade, elementary school, as I enter
Intent on not being hell-bent, I take a seat,
Teacher says “Stand up, hand on your heart, now please repeat:”
They told the story of the stripes and stars,
How we raised the bar, how we came so far.
And how we learned from all of our mistakes,
The kind we made, nobody anymore wants to make.
But as I awake from the mists of memory,
As I surface from the purpose of the first me,
I look around, to see just what I’m missin.
It doesn’t glisten. You’ll hear it if just you listen…

(chorus)

And now I’m back in history class like detention,
7th grade, constitutional convention.
Teacher keeps mentionin the basic rights:
Speak up, stand tall, don’t be afraid to fight.
Take what’s right and just give it away.
Don’t be afraid, cause nobody’s got enough to pay
For the things they deserve, in a fundamental way,
Let them bust their own ass to earn the grass to play.
Cause half of us can’t carry everyone.
We got to bust a sweat to earn a place in the sun.
I hate to cut you off before you’ve even begun,
But you gotta pay some dues to earn some fun.
And all along, it was about the rise and fall,
If you made it – you rate it, if not, you ate the wall.
But in the replay, something was missing from it all,
I don’t know what. My man can sing the chorus just to stall…

(chorus)

High school, like civics and government,
I shouldda paid attention to the time I spent.
Insteada starin’ at the cheerleader’s chest,
Or thinking about cramming for an algebra test.
Mr. Hoffman squawks about something that’s been lost.
A precious treasure that can’t be replaced, at any cost.
A concept, like a Platonic ideal,
A one of a kind, somehow made real.
What disappeared, what’s disappearin every day,
What is the word that you just can’t say?
What is the thing you you don’t have any more?
What is the word written right on the door?
What is the thing we are lackin, as the hourglass drips,
What is the glue to keep from crackin, as my sanity slips?
What is the plant, is the leaf, is the root, is the seed?
What is the 5th element? I think it’s freedom we need.
