I don't really understand the whole genre thing too good me. Nope. I mean, I understand it, per se, ie., as a convenient gimmick for looking up artists in record stores or on the internet etc. I mean, t'were I to seek out tunes by Thelonious Monk I'd of course look in the jazz category not rock or classical or techno or country or comedy etc. BUT last few years the scheme seems to have broken down somewhat. Wherefore would you seek for Beck, for instance? Or Richard James? The plain old rock section doesn't meet the need. Modern genres have exploded as folks have become computeristic.

But mainly as far as my own simple tunes I usually have no idea how to rate 'em as per the genre thing. Is my stuff rock? No, not really. Electronic? I wouldn't say so. Jazz? Nope. Techno? What's that? Folk? Hmm.. no, not as usually understood. You could say sort of a digital folk for the new millenium, but.. naw, nobody else would know what this is. So I don't know how to categorize my stuff. I would say "retro beatnik" but again nobody but me and my cohorts would know what it is. A lot of people who dig my tunes say "oh yeah, beatnik.. yeah, that's it." I lot of my stuff is I would think "funky" in terms of no chord changes, ie., rhythm driven, but it ain't "funk" in terms of what most people mean when they say funk. A lot of my stuff is bluesy in so far as I favor the blues scales and when I do use chord progs, generally I prefer the simple blues progs, ie., I-IV-V cadences. But my stuff ain't the "blues" per se and any real blues player would say "nope, that ain't the blues either."

So.. what a dilemma.
