A lot of people like candy more than fruit, and Verizon has been making a big deal about their Chocolate Phone which is an mp3 player/phone for a while now. Not the portable computer that the iPhone is touted to be, but enough to satisfy most people for relatively short money. It'll be a long time before the iPhone changes my life, I still am working with my G4 eMac!

Er, I had to say no, what they have done is reinvent the PDA. While probably not capable of it now, the fact that iPhone runs Mac OS X (not a cutdown version, rather an optimised version), the portent of this is a pocket office tool in future generations. Add in Grafitti, advanced Speech Recognition and iWork, and you've got the ultimate roadwarrior's handheld.
In a few generations, add in an optimised iLife and a built-in iSight camera and YouTube will kill the MTV star (my apologies to Trever Horn )
This will happen before the end of 2010, I'm tipping. Australia, of course, won't see it until 3010

To the Poll, I say No!
But they have come up with a damn cool phone/ipod/mobiwebthingy!!!!
My current contract runs until the time iPhone gets introduced here!!!1 Whoopieee!!!! So I'll be in the early adopters group as usual... I like the living on the edge!!
BUT!!!! The pricing has to be right! We in the UK have a very different pricing arrangement for our mobiles than the US. I wonder what we'll get come October - November?

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space, hey
I'm warming a bit to the iPhone as I find out more about its capabilities, but mainly because I really like the idea of truely portable computing (I'd love to see a 2nd or 3rd gen iPhone with Firewire and Garage Band - add a PreSonus Firepod, make music anywhere and UPLOAD FROM ANYWHERE!)

Yes, The exciting part for me is that it has Mac OS X built in, so the possibilities are endless.... don't know where my Logic Pro dongle will fit though...

Indeed, but even if it only ever ran GB, that's probably enough for a portable sketch pad, then transfer the project to Logic when you get home.
I suspect it may take a few years to convince Apple, this is a creative's portable studio.

i often thought that but then i had read an article boris had found about Sting and it appeared to be well Sting so i thought maybe they had changed their platform.
so i went and looked around some mo, only to find they were claiming 4 of the bill of rights had been stricken from the books
all that said i wouldn't be surprised at the rate in which this technology flies by that within a year it will be an old interface so to speak.
still i wouldn't buy one. for half a grand i could be 1/4 the way closer to the martin d-28 i been eye ballin fo ever it seems
