This is an aging baby-boomer's idea of a "hi fi" and is a shiney, white plastic version of those sort of stereos they sell in those home aid catalogues

The ipod dock is an appalling piece of design for a device intended to be semi-portable, and looks like an erect, rectangular penis sticking out of a giant, swollen, cubiod scrotum. Flush in the top, surely, Mr Jobs

No RMS power rating given in the tech specs, but with a sensitivity of 108dB at 1 metre, it probably cranks in an average bedroom or in the back of a panel van, but don't bother taking it out to the barbecue or down to the beach.

And no Airport streaming. The RRP this baby clocks in at is probably too light for that, but is too steep for not having it.

Macrumours were spot on yet again in predicting this new gizmo.

Whatever next? An Apple HD TV with iPod integration?

my old home stereo has an am/fm receiver built-in.

beyond output, this product doesn't really offer much more than what's been available for quite some time anyway.

and look at the way the iPod sits on top. the remote control does not allow for menu scrolling, so to choose a playlist, genre, or album (etc.), you have to do it with your ifingers still. good luck when you have a party and one of your sausage-thumbed friends accidentally snaps the connector! ouch!

it looks like a fabulous, but i fear it's still a first version product. it's going to have to blow the socks off the competition sound-wise to get any real foothold.

i think.

bah, just ignore me! bad day! ;)

Man, I didn't even think about that... So what did Apple reinvent apart from the price tag? It had better sound bloody good...

I'm underwhelmed. And frankly, it's ugly.

There are third-party products that do a better job.

I have a Tivoli Audio Model Two that I use with my iPod and it's elegant in design and, since the speakers can actually be placed far apart from each other, it has fabulous, true stereo sound.

Blows the Apple product away.

I hate it, even if it sounds good!

What's with no controls and a frickin' load of black plastic!

Not to mention the sticky uppy ipod mounting style!!!!!

And the rants could go on..

But I'm saving some for the new mini pricing!

So Jobs is replacing his rich man stereo with this!

I'll have to hear one now.. well if they drop the price, sort out the docking and add a display (one you read across the room)

Where did you hear that Rich?

Also I like this, the "selected" press, namely not Macidol, were invited to try out the iPod Hi-Fi in "simulated" rooms - check out the teenagers room (must be bloody rich teenagers!) , with authentic strewn clothes etc.

Altec Lansing show how cabinet design for an iPod speaker is done properly...

That said, I haven't been too impressed with Altec Lansing soundwise in the last decade.

never heard of this company before. that iSongbook is exactly what i've been looking for (an alternative to the cheap-ass iHome). only problem for me is it's about $400 after taxes. holy crap, that'spensive!

but you're right maggie - their stuff is amazing!
