Mac music news & MacIDOL news and announcements

The PowerFX email newsletter that arrived today offered this interesting -- and exciting -- tidbit: "We've just provided Apple Computer with content for their upcoming World Jam Pack. It's a huge collection of ethnic sounds and phrases... The material represents a lot of traditional styles of music played by traditional musicians... All the material is tagged with the Apple Loops meta-data making it compatible with all of Apple's Pro Audio applications such as GarageBand, Logic Pro, and Soundtrack."
Although there's no mention of when this new Jam Pack is due out, it makes sense that Apple will release it at the same time iLife '06 hits the shelves in January.

hells yes! I love world loops - apple bring me more sitars! Bagpipes would also be mighty fun. So ILife '06 eh? Does that mean GB 3? I sure hope so
Windows: made for smashing.

You guys are very funny! Bagpipes and vibraslap, indeed!
If this new Jam Pack is like the existing four, it will include software instruments in addition to loops. I'm hoping that a high percentage of the loops will be MIDI-based, as were so many in Jam Pack 4, so we can slice, dice, and mangle 'em any way we want.
I'm also hoping that Apple releases a second Jam Pack alongside World Jam Pack, since two were released concurrently with iLife '05. More is better.
The rumor mongers -- Appleinsider.com and Macrumors.com, in particular -- haven't mentioned GB3 but predict iLife '06 will include Front Row for any G4 or G5 Mac (along with a remote control for separate purchase).

Or the Kora! It's a very beautiful West African instrument - played by the Griots [Bards] of that part of the world. I've tried finding some good egs for you all to listen to without much luck. Here's a link - click on the "English" section - but only if you are English of course! The Kora - absolutely my favourite instrument - go out and check some out tomorrow.
I've been lucky enough to see some live Kora music played by masters in Cassemance - it really was something else.

Found a couple more links - sorry but I really like this instrument!

They're only short - but very very good. Check it out - you won't be disappointed.

Kora - Love it! What a beautiful sounding instrument!
Thanks Dave for the links. I would love to learn how to play that, but I have enough trouble with 4 and 6 strings.
I hope the World Jam Pack has some Tibetan Monk Chants.
There is a VST instrument the Delay Lama, which I hope one day will be ported to AU format.
It is one of my dreams to be able to record some real Tibetan Monks... maybe I'll have to make a trip to Dharamsala... or if the political situation changes to Lhasa, which really would be something.
Also, in readiness for the World Jam Pack we have our new World Music section

I gave up trying. Fingers like sausages! Might be able to manage a chant or two though.
The World section is bloody great - excellent graphics. Looks really inviting. I love the way you have off-centred Dub and Ska - touch of class that!

the kora is truly a work of art, just in design. it's beautiful!!
of course, if it were up to Sting, we'd be discussing the hurdy-gurdy.
hmmm... a hurdy-gurdy jam pack. i'd buy that!

Thanks, Dave your too kind. Obviously this is just the start, of what I would like to acheive here. The other genres are still not complete tho, so we'll fix that and then delve deeper into each genre. Like Zydeco for instance - not something that I am too familiar with...
Likewise the Hurdy Gurdy is a new one for me - so let's hope it is in the new (alleged) World Jam Pack eh? Boris?
Maybe we could start a new World Band? Dave on Chants and Kora, Boris on the Hurdy Gurdy and Vibraslap, Macattack on Sitar and Bagpipes, Bass and Drum on erm, drum and bass and Bill J slicing and dicing - I can play the triangle.

Nice - I like the way you get the individual world genres down the side and then the master genres.
It would make sense to have a link to the full list of any genre rather than the 'most recent' by each artist. Maybe just a 'more' at the bottom of the track listing. Most of the World Genres have way less than 100 tracks. Maybe just the link back to the old listing, if those pages will be updated to the new look.
for example - the Celtic genre could have a link to the old Celtic Listing - would make it easier to find other tracks in the genre rather than trying to search each artist page.

Vibraslap is a great sound to combine with a bullwhip sound -- it would be like when the cowpoke meets a sidewinder. Very Ennio Morricone.
I hope the new world jampack has a few different bodhran beats, or the instrument (there's a lot of different sounds you get with a bodhran). For that matter, I would love to have tabla loops and / or instrument. Heck, just lots more drum sounds.

I was looking for a bullwhip sound for one of my Robota tunes. There's a sound that comes close -- but isn't quite "it" -- among the orchestral percussion in Jam Pack 4. I'll bet the World Jam Pack will have plenty of exotic percussion -- perhaps even a real whip or two. Keep them doggies movin'... Rawhide!
