Ain't No Way

Postby Joanna » Wed Dec 22, 2004 2:08 am

This is a collaboration with a friend named Stun Nutz. I laid down the vocals first (to a bass and drum) and then he took that and did all the rest.

Ain't No Way

Let us know what you think.

I love the idea of your collaboration, and I'm envious that someone was able to capture your voice this way (not jealous mind you, just happily envious!) ;)

Let's face it - it's really quite bizarre. It reminds me of the obscure art gatherings I used to attend back in my art school daze, deep beneath the streets of Boston.

What I enjoy about this tune is that it shows that you, J, are not stuck in one genre - and not that I'd say you were, but this one shows that you can travel far outside what I "thought" I could expect. That's amazing in itself, I guess!

I wasn't quite sure where the song was going after a while. It sort of floated out there, rising and falling, perhaps a bit like a nervous storm.

I don't know if that makes any sense. But, for what it's worth, I think it is a wonderful collaboration and the two elements seem to be seamless as one form. The voice and the music danced well together and for the observer, it was a mask of chaos covering something probably more well devised. (huhn?) ;)

Thank you both for putting this out there!

Thanks, Boris! It's definitely outside my usual fare, though in truth, the original vocal track sounds rather normal for me. So it's my partner in this one that spun into a new genre.

Thank you for listening and commenting, Boris!

whoo, this is dark, girl, you gonna throw some light on where this one came from? Is the distortion (bit crushing?) deliberate? (I ask because it works on the mood.)

I hope you're only investigating that place, and not actually there. It's very bleak if it's a life! The range here never ceases to amaze me, and this is no exception - compelling.

Thank you, Kilroy!

I tend to approach songs as both a fiction writer and an actress. In my head, I get a story, and then I sing as if I'm the main character.

My vocals in this one were purely improvised -- no lyrics written down, no ideas in my head. When I started singing, the story of a battered woman came into my head, so I played that role, singing what she'd say if she knew that there was no way out. She's not going to count how many times it's happened -- it would be like counting all the pebbles or every droplet in the sea. Not something she wants to contemplate. So she just goes on.

Eric (Stun Nutz) took my dark vocals and put in water, fire, and the distortion.

My friend, you are always welcome. I cherish your explorative nature and willingness to put it out for chumps like me to indulge and revel in!

So... again, thank you! ;)

Wow! You take some of your songs places I'd be too scared to make public. Great stuff, real 6 over the sight screen (sorry, cricket - I should say homer over the bleachers ;) )
