Just posted one of my favorite folk songs. Written in 1852, I can't find any evidence on the web that it's still copyright protected. In fact, all I could find was evidence that it was in the public domain. However, if it's at all iffy (I did not find a definitive answer -- just lots no evidence of copyright anywhere), I'll take it down asap.

i think you'll be okay with that old of a tune. just matters if someone has copywritten it of late. which if they had you would have found somethin. especially if it were copywritten after 1972. records started really being kept and actually laws were passed.
anyhoo, i dig the double vox. as well as the genre. i have a few guitar things i put old 1700 & 1800 poems to. only cuz poems of that era "speak" the tongue so well.
good job joanna.

Wow Joanna, I really like this song. Your voice really suits this genre and the background vocals sound very nice. Keep up the good work girl!!

Sometimes there is nothing so pure as the human voice, a pure celebration of life in music.

Thank you so much, Robert, ktu, & Kilroy -- I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I love traditional songs, as they usually have a great deal of earthy power. One can almost hear this being sung in an Irish pub, or in the goldfields of California, music tying together different cultures, experiences, etc.
It would be fun to have some instruments behind it, but I haven't the time or the talent. Therefore, the harmonies have to serve that capacity. Probably much closer to the way it was sung in those pubs, I imagine.

I really don't know much about this, which is why I was rather tentative in posting my song. I looked on the web, and couldn't find anything about it being copyrighted. One site had a bunch of songs, including some traditional, and they had copyright notices next to many of the songs, but not on this one. I took that as a strong sign that it was purely public domain. I do know that it has been recorded, but it seems to me that the copyright there would be on the recording, and maybe the arrangement, but not the song itself.

Not a lawyer, but I would think that if the song is PD, you should be safe if all you do is your own interpretation of the PD song.
Where you might get into trouble is if a modern singer has added their own special touch, and you add that special touch in. You need your own special touches.

It's definitely my interpretation. I learned the song from a CD, but my version is very different. I've looked over the CD and only the arrangement is copyrighted. So I'm in the clear.
That said, if it worries anyone, I'll take it down. The friend for whom I posted it has heard it now, so it doesn't matter to me.
