Sounds Like Love

James, you had asked for input, although i'm probably not the one you really need it from. However, i just wanted to say that i think it's a lovely song and i like it with the extra instruments.

The only thing that every once in a while i notice, that i might tone down a little, is some of the drum beats. Sometimes, to my ears, there are too many beats in certain little places and especially the cymbal type sounds. I don't know why and maybe i'm wrong, of course. And then, when it gets more Frittered up with Kelli's voice, those parts might be perfect, too.

I think the synth part sounds really good in this! I like the effect of it very much.

This is such a sweet song and that's what comes across most of all.

Oh, and HAPPY (belated?) BIRTHDAY! :D :D :D

Sounds like love to me too. I really like the song, especially the last third, which is very good.
Please allow me to throw in my two cents. Please take the comments as positive:
I like the drums and cymbals!
I would like the fist two thirds shortened a bit, then add a chorus where you push your vocals - Really try new ground by stretching your vocal cords to regions you always wanted to get to but never tried. (No wait, that's me!)
But seriously, I would like you to push a little bit to get that emotion out, and with the faster tempo of the start of the last third of the song.
I did at times think your vocals and arrangement were very polished.
Well done and thanks for sharing.

While a tad lengthy I think you have balanced things out rather nicely. I too dig the percussion and for me it really moves the song along.

As usual the tones are tasty as well.

Can't wait to hear the harmony 8)

Thanks for the comments:
Yes it is a bit lengthy and I think that that little ending part will probably be chopped off; it serves no purpose and is only a little indulgence of mine. I've done this type of thing in the past and it was only in the course of doing another recording of this song (I have about 4 different versions of it so far) that I decided to go off on a tangent. When we do the album I probably will have a couple interludes like this that carry the song through the album as a recurring theme... The songs we have planned for the album are rather disparate and having a common theme as an interlude might tie them all together.

One of the things that is interesting to me about Fritters songs is when they are arrived at by me improvising a guitar part and then sending it to Kelli to write words to. She crafts such good words that usually that's how the song ends up structured. Usually that means that I've played an A-B part a couple times through and got bored and added in a C part on the end of the song. Then without much editing I send it along to Kelli to see what she thinks, and after a period of time she sends it back to me with lyrics and a vocal. The lyrical flow that Kelli comes up with doesn't seem to bear rearranging much, as the punch line or lyrical turnaround comes in the bridge and is best left to the end. So we end up with a lot of songs that have a bridge on the very end of the song. I don't mind this that much much it is a little asymmetrical in terms of song structure. So while I was re-doing this I thought I would try to balance it a bit with an instrumental on the end, but the coda truly is a little noodle-y and only dilutes the message. So it will be snipped and used elsewhere. Fun stuff...also I was just getting into recording my acoustic a little differently, using a Joe Meek OneQ preamp compressor combination to make the acoustic guitar sort of jump out. Stepping up my game a bit on this one so I wanted to just get into what I was putting down sonically.

As far as stretching my vocal chords, well I don't know if you want to be subjected to that. I've been making more of an effort to under-sing stuff these days, and making that mesh with Kelli's vocal can sometimes be interesting. Once she adds in her vocal I'll repost this as a Fritters song. I'm pretty happy with it, and probably won't change it much except for Kelli's harmonies.

Hey James,
I completely ignored the collaboration aspect of the song. That's actually amazing that you have some one who clicks with your mind in creating songs. I envy you.
I see the whole song in a different light now and anxiously await the next version.
Thanks for describing your process. It is a good model to follow.
Cheers,
Tom
