Cast The First Stone

Postby cStu » Sun Oct 16, 2005 10:41 pm

Greetings Earthlings (and Ikhabod)!

If anyone actually likes the first draft of Cast The First Stone then get it while you can  download link, or QT link

I've been messing with it today, and there are some 'great new features' in the new version - to be released when Audacity finishes chug chuggin through it's paces, Bless it.

So Gone are the Overcooked (and at the same time disarmingly raw) vocals.
Gone is the first time Mandolin noodling
Gone (but not forgotten) is the Telecaster rhythm section

I think the lyrics are better now, too.

Chug Chug High Pass filter, chug chug ...

Oh and all the voices are in the same room now.

Chug chug Lo Pass filter chug chug ...

I'll let you know when the new one is up

I was just kidding about the Genre BTW - I think it's some breed of New Folk song

I really like it, too, i like the instruments and rhythm, and your voice is nice when it's loud and raspy.

Thank You both for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It started life as such a raucous thing
I'm happy with the faster bits, now, too. Though the slower vocal needs something but I don't know what ...

Yeah! New Folk. :D

Howdo Stu,

First version passed the "iPod Commuter Blot Out The Mobile Phone Idiots Test" with flying colours - I really like it! [and I don't like "Death Metal" either...] So I'm off now to dowload the second version. Cheers!

just catching on to this one, cStu! super earthy sounding! something from a folk festival or perhaps one of those medieval gatherings. this could be a wonderful track in a larger concept collection of songs. a whole story comprised of parts. "who's going to cast the first stone?"

the idea spins me off into thinking of how cool it would be to interview all the people who were there at the stoning of Mary Magdelane (the biblical tale) to hear their side of the story and what they all thought. interesting? maybe. i dunno.

i like this kind of raw production, and i certainly hear a comparitive sound to RCAndrews, toots, and myself. it's slimmed down from all the gizmodgery that can often eat up our songs into an overworked muddle of effects versus music. this is basic recording 101, and for me, this is what i love... both doing and listening to.

well done! i'd love to hear more like this. thx U!

Stu,

Love the energy of this piece. I like the mandolin & the vocal on the chourus. It now sits comfortably between Guided by Voices and Gun Club in iTunes here in the Crow's Nest. It'll be getting a lot of play...

A lot of people don't uderstand that you can rock out on acoustic instruments, but they're not just for easy listenin', y' know. I often thought many of Husker Du's songs were written on acoustic & then played in the band on electric. I know some of X's songs got written on an acoustic guitar bass. Glad you understand that, Stu.

I think I need to write an acoustic punk song. No hurry though, I have 2 completed things in cue, waiting for the current Frogmorton tune to move to page 2 of the "new nusic". It's sad, because the thing that's up there now is one a' them learning curve things that I actually intended as difficult listening (I have several of those as you well know) While the 2 I have waiting are new & actually my fave things I've done so far.

So you guys -- post some new songs! :D :D :D ;) :D :D

Glad to be of service, M'Lord

On the button, Boris. I had three different songs based on the title, none of which came out when I started to record. There is such a lot to say about this, so if anyone feels the need, then go for it! I'd love to hear another take on the story behind the title.

I look forward to hearing that. Personally I can't wait - once I have a track approaching completion I post it up, sometimes to my regret the following morning. i wish I had your restraint

It is great to let rip with acoustic instruments. 100% 8)

Thanks for the comments and listens guys. It is appreciated.

Slightly tweaked new version up now (same links as above).

redid the first verse, with only one voice. which makes it a tad more listenable.

Thanks for the pm Matt.

Stu--

The new version sounds much better! I like the single-tracked vocal in the first verse a lot. It made me smile when I heard it.

cheers!

Crisper, cleaner, and overall, very professional. I did an A/B comparison yesterday arvo and much prefer the latest model. (1.2)

Nice one, Kilroy. Thanks for checkin it out. I feel a bit of a fraud accepting the "very professional" comment as it feels to me like it's gone as far as I can go without actually learning a melody for it  so it's at the "let's go for a swift glass of Guinness and get back to it later" stage.

If it is in any way reasonably well recorded it's down to GarageBand and all the help and inspiration I've had chatting and listening to all you MacIdolers (oh yeah! and all the time I've put in this year  )

there - I'm all emotional and I'm just drinking tea

better join in Maggs and Dava in a quick glass of vino  cheers

In other words, it's real music. Overproduction is for tossers like Bon Jovi ;)
